Before the July AI week in Geneva, two UN convenings in New York set the stage. In late June 2026, the new Independent International Scientific Panel on AI briefed member states and prepared the evidence base the Global Dialogue would build on, and UN Open Source Week held the UN's first dedicated day on open-source AI. Together they framed the year's central question: who gets to shape AI, and on what evidence. Coverage of each follows.
